Pork Barrel BBQ was honored to take part in the 2009 Taste for Giving event sponsored by the Rotary Club of Alexandria.  The event was at the Torpedo Factory in Old Town Alexandria.  It was an evening of fine food and community spirit to benefit many charities in our community.  The Alexandria Commission for the Arts is partnering in this event to present the ALEX Awards, which recognizes individuals, organizations, schools, and businesses that have made exceptional contributions to the cultural life in the City of Alexandria.

Pork Barrel BBQ Wins the Taste of Del Ray 2009 Peoples Choice Award

Friday, September 4th, 2009
We are proud to announce that last night Pork Barrel BBQ won the Del Ray Business Association’s Taste of Del Ray People’s Choice Award. The Taste of Del Ray brings restaurants throughout the Del Ray Neighborhood in Alexandria, Virginia, together to provide samples of their food – we gave out over 400 servings of our award winning pulled pork sandwiches and Mango Mike’s bourbon bread pudding. The Pork Barrel BBQ Restaurant is currently under construction and will open next spring on Mt. Vernon Avenue next to St. Elmo’s Coffee Pub and The Dairy Godmother.

We’d like to give special thanks to the Del Ray Business Association and Gayle Reuter for hosting such a great evening, Mary Abraham and Eric Reid of Del Merei Grill for organizing the event, Christie Hart and Executive Chef Will Artley from the Evening Star Cafe for showing us the ropes (this was their 11th year!), and Sheriff Dana Lawhorne for keeping us all safe (see below)!

Just Attended a Great Block Party with BBQ – Affirmed Why We Started Pork Barrel BBQ

Sunday, August 2nd, 2009

My family just attended a great block party – of course, I was attracted to the BBQ grills. I took a photo of the three BBQ grills that had been rolled out of several backyards to create the temporary kitchen on the lawn. The food (burgers, hotdogs and bratwurst) was excellent (I had three brats and didn’t have to cook at all!), and the entire experience just affirmed why we founded Pork Barrel BBQ. There is something uniquely American about a great BBQ that lets people forget their worries and come together as a community. Particularly in these economic times, where there just seems to be an extra pressure surrounding everything, it was truly amazing to watch how 75 people celebrated the good things in life. If you want to bring this celebration to your backyard – be sure to try our All American Spice Rub!

Pork Barrel BBQ Was a Donor at the 2009 Taste of the South Charity Gala Held in Washington, DC on May 16

Monday, May 25th, 2009

On Saturday, May 16 Pork Barrel BBQ donated our Pork Barrel BBQ All American Spice Rub to the 27th annual Taste of the South charity gala held at the D.C. Armory in Washington, D.C.  (We were very excited to see our name just to the right of one of our favorite BBQ joints – Gates BBQ in Kansas City, MO.)  This year’s featured charity was the Magnolia Speech School of Mississippi, a private, nonprofit, oral education program for children with hearing loss and language disorders.  Additionally, a small portion of the funds raised went to Jubilee Jobs, a Washington, D.C. based charity that provides support for disadvantaged job-seekers in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area.

Taste of the South was a great time for all that attended, even though it felt like it was 100 degrees inside the D.C. Armory. We are already looking forward to next years Taste of the South and the chance to help some worthy charities.

In addition to giving back to the community Pork Barrel BBQ used this opportunity to unveil our new label on the sample bags of our All American Spice Rub. Here’s what they look like up close. Let us know what you think of the new look and don’t forget to visit us www.porkbarrelbbq.com!

Pork Barrel BBQ Makes Donation To The 2009 Taste of the South Charity Gala

Friday, May 8th, 2009

At Pork Barrel BBQ we believe it is important to be involved in and give back to the local community and we are pleased to announce that we will be a donor at the 27th annual Taste of the South to be held at the D.C. Armory in Washington, D.C. on the evening of Saturday, May 16, 2009.  Pork Barrel BBQ will be providing sample bags of our All American Spice Rub to those who visit the Missouri booth at this years gala.

The first Taste of the South was held in 1983 in an effort to share the rich tradition of the South with the residents of the Washington, D.C. region.  States participating in Taste of the South include Arkansas, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia.

All proceeds raised by the event go to a southern based charity.  This year’s featured charity is the Magnolia Speech School of Mississippi.  For more than 50 years, the Magnolia Speech School, a private, nonprofit, oral education program for children with hearing loss and language disorders, has provided children with life-changing curricula that has enabled each student to reach their potential.  A small portion of the funds raised this year will go to Jubilee Jobs, a Washington, D.C. based charity that provides support for disadvantaged job-seekers throughout the DC metropolitan area.
